Should You Build a Memory Foam Mattress Yourself?
Memory foam mattresses are all the rage today and many people are already contemplating their second one. They adore to sleep on the mattress but would like to correct some of the shortcomings of their first one . In some cases the memory foam layer was not of the proper density.
Although there are many websites where you can order your latex mattress in parts and give you an opportunity to swap mattress parts if they're too soft or too hard, there are not that many stores that offer memory foam mattresses in a component format so you can construct it yourself. The stores may have a wide choice of such mattresses from soft to firm but they will not allow you to swap out one foam topper for a different one. One of the reasons is that in addition to the high quality models offered by Tempurpedic and other visco elastic foam manufacturers that have mattresses with 3 or more layers, memory foam mattresses are usually simple affairs. They have a topper that is anywhere from 2 to 4 inches thick and a support foam layer that is greater then 5 inches in thickness. Your choice is commonly restricted to two, plush and firm. Because of the elasticity, memory foam is also a great solution for an adjustable bed mattress, as long as you don't get one bigger than 11 inches.
The reason for visco elastic foam mattress choices being simple is that the principle they are based upon is simple. Ninety percent of the benefit provided by a memory foam mattress has to do with the topper. This part is usually the only one that is technically made of memory foam material. The support foam underneath is merely to provide support and the quality of materials used for this layer varies a lot depending on mattress price and manufacturer. This is due to the fact that it just doesn’t influence that much the quality of sleep and so most of producers don't attach so much importance to it. Consequently, you are unlikely to find visco elastic foam mattress producers or dealers providing "do it yourself" mattresses.
That being the case, the best way to have a customized memory foam mattress is to research all the foam toppers available as best you can based on what you already have. Once you receive that topper you can usually peel away your existing unsatisfactory topper (even though it will laminate) from the support layer and just put the new one over the supporting foam. Then all you have to do is stuff them back in your existing zippered mattress cover or get a new one and you’re done .
